Mrs. Nicholson Performing Arts Director
As the director of performing arts at Santa Fe Christian School my desire is to provide all of our students with a biblical world view that will equip them to be Christian leaders in the 21st century. With a mandate to educate the total child – mind, body, and spirit, I am convinced of the importance that the arts play in that process.
Recent studies have come to conclude that academic test scores are greatly enhanced when students participate in the arts. It has also been noted that children who participate in performing arts develop confidence and self esteem which is vital in relating to others all throughout life. Perhaps the most important aspect of the arts to me is that our students are provided an opportunity to have an even closer relationship with their Creator during the creative process, and that can lead to worshipful experiences.
Because performing arts is one of the greatest influences in our society today, it is important that our children see it as a wonderful gift from God to be nurtured in righteousness and shared with a needy world. Through music, theatre, and dance, students are given an opportunity to explore their creative gifts in a safe and nurturing environment.
- Music – offered all three trimesters - develops skills in reading and playing, basic notation and rhythmic patterns, analyzing different styles of music, exploring and comparing various cultural works, and examining themes and the power of instrumentation.
- Theatre – part of our four-week performing arts block - explores sensory recall, improvisation, characterization, pantomime, drama in literature, script development and analysis, and the evaluation process needed in critiquing art
- Creative Dance – also part of the performing arts enrichment block - develops an awareness of movement and how it relates to other art forms. Students learn to incorporate the elements of body, space, force and time, while developing simple choreographic pieces.
Our performing arts program plays a vital role in providing an educational experience that impacts all academic areas and an opportunity for all students to worship the Lord through their unique gifts.
