¡BIENVENIDOS! One of the reasons I began enjoying Spanish in high school and college related to several visits to Spanish-speaking countries. Here are some of the exciting things I’ve done so far: observed numerous surgeries at the Hospital General de Tijuana; taught a summer school in a rural neighborhood in Tijuana where families lived in shacks made of wood, cardboard, and car hoods; spent the night on trains traveling all over Spain; served as a teacher and translator for a medical and dental team in Ecuador; and finally, honeymooned in Argentina – the birthplace of the tango and Manu Ginóbili. Like many of you, I also participated in short term service trips to Mexico with my college group and church. After my first trip, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of my Mexican neighbors and their willingness to accept me as an hermana en Cristo. As a result of my love for the language, people, and culture, I majored in Spanish with an emphasis in Latin American Studies at Amherst College a long time ago. After teaching at SFC for six years, I returned to complete my Master’s in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I briefly worked for UCSD’s Early Outreach Program and read freshman applications for admissions. Knowing Spanish is more than just knowing another language. Speaking another language opens the door to ministry to the “stranger.” My hope is that through this course, you will develop a heart of compassion for God’s people – here in San Diego and around the world. Although it may be frustrating to remember the word for “jar” or to conjugate verbs in the present subjunctive, may you have a teachable heart, open to new experiences and challenges. I know that God can do amazing things through you if you are available to Him. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2 “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 EXTRA HELP HOURS (also by appointment) I am also available during lunch except for Tuesdays (Spanish Club) and Wednesdays (Lunch Duty)
