Third Grade - Fifth Grade

Third Grade
An emphasis on reading both in and out of the classroom is an integral part of the third grade program. Open Court, a phonics based reading program, is used to teach reading and critical thinking through many genres of literature. Language includes an emphasis on creative writing plus the study of parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization. Regrouping, multiplication and division facts to 12 including long division with remainders, fractions, decimals to the tenths, geometry, and problem solving are part of the math program. Geography, map skills, and the study of the development of our nation are the focus of social studies. Discovery learning takes place in science as the scientific method is applied to the learning of senses, animals, water, earth’s resources, and the solar system. ACSI Bible and Christ and His Church, is a study of God’s plan for mankind, and for building His church . . . Jesus, as it relates to His ministry, death, and resurrection is also a part of the third grade program.

Fourth Grade
We concentrate on an innovative fourth grade program to allow students to have a successful learning experience. We incorporate biblical truths in our everyday program and apply what we have learned. We also work on establishing friendships and dealing with life’s issues. Our literature based McGraw Hill program including additional novels provides for the practice, application and assessment of critical reading skills. This program also develops writing skills. For math we use Excel Math and critical thinking activities to unite basic number facts with practical numerical relationships. We study California history and government with an emphasis on map reading skills for social studies. A special hands-on curriculum has been developed and the highlight of the study is a special program, entitled “Walk Through California”. In science, students develop an interest in the world that God has created and an awareness of the important role science plays in human progress and development. Experiments enhance our program as students observe, formulate hypotheses, and draw conclusions while incorporating critical thinking skills.

Fifth Grade
Students in the fifth grade strive to achieve transitional goals. There is an emphasis on responsibility as each student prepares for the Middle School. Fifth graders develop critical thinking skills and are encouraged to play an effective role in society. They are involved in an in depth Bible study with an overview of the Old Testament. In Social Studies fifth graders study American history and geography from the first appearance of the Early Explorers to the Civil War era. A highlight of the study is a special program, entitled “Walk With Lewis and Clark”. The writing curriculum will teach students the process of writing; from pre-writing to editing to the final draft of a composition, and will be integrated in all subjects. The highlight of science is a visit to the “Floating Marine Lab.” The Math program includes division, decimals, and fractions, along with an integration of thinking skills and logic. Fifth grade is an exciting year of growth in all subject areas and spiritually we continue to encourage students to be confident in Biblical foundational principles in all they attempt.
