Kindergarten Kindergarten focus’ on developing the whole child - spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. There are many creative opportunities for the children, every day in each area of the curriculum. Our reading program includes a strong phonics base, beginning reading and some whole language activities. The math program uses hands-on activities and math concepts are developed through the use of Math Their Way and a Silver Burdett text. Bible instruction covers Old and New Testament stories with practical applications while Bible verse memorization is a weekly part of our program. Science and social studies are taught from a Biblical viewpoint with many explorative activities. Specialists teach our music, and physical education programs.
First Grade In first grade we continue to create an atmosphere where each student will enjoy learning. Open Court, the Reading and Writing Program, gives everything needed to build a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning. The foundation is made of the skills and strategies that lead to early independence in decoding, comprehension, writing and thinking. Silver Burdett and Excel Mathematics develops within each student an understanding of math concepts, a functional use of math skills, and an ability to apply this to daily living. The social studies’ curriculum introduces the student to God’s plan for the family, home, church, community, country, and world. Each student’s interest in science will be stimulated through an introduction to the wonders of God’s creation realizing that God is the master designer of all. Observation, hands on exploration, and discovery will be emphasized.
Second Grade Children in second grade continue to develop reading skills and strategies that emphasize strong phonetics, comprehension and enjoyable children’s literature. Correlated language arts and spelling skills (phonetic and high frequency words), beginning dictionary and encyclopedia skills are incorporated. Creative writing and journals are encouraged. D’Nealian handwriting lessons continue and cursive letter formation is taught. Math focuses on concrete objects, numeration to 1000, and computations to 20, regrouping and beginning multiplication. Science features scientific creationism, seasonal activities, and hands on experiences. Social studies emphasize community and cultural awareness and historical people and events. Christian character traits and Bible verse memorization encourage our students to apply the basic truths of the Bible to their daily lives.
